Holyhead Maritime Museum
This Museum, based in a 19th century former lifeboat station, houses many interesting collections relating to the area’s maritime history. Exhibits here include models of lifeboats, and displays about historic shipwrecks and rescues in the area, as well as models of ships from the 1800’s and 1900’s. There are also many maritime artefacts including uniforms, medals and tools, and you can also see a jawbone and teeth from a woolly mammoth which was found in Holyhead Harbour. Next to the Museum you can also see an exhibition about wartime in Holyhead housed in a former World War II air raid shelter.
South Stack Lighthouse
You can visit this Lighthouse built at the beginning of the 19th century, which warns ships of the dangerous rocky coastline of the area around South Stack Island near Holyhead. You can come and look around the lighthouse and engine room and see the lighthouse exhibition there, as well as having stunning views across the coast.
South Stack Cliffs and RSPB Reserve
Here you can enjoy great views of the coastline and all the sights of the RSPB Nature Reserve. There’s a Visitors Centre and Ellin’s Tower Seabird Centre which provides information about all the fascinating species of birds on the cliffs that you can watch with great views from the Tower. Some of the birds that you can see, depending on the season, include puffins, guillemots and peregrines, and dolphins and porpoises can also be seen, and visitors can also enjoy the cliff top landscape of heath and grassland and the abundant nature of the area.
Holyhead Breakwater Country Park
You can enjoy the scenery in this lovely Country Park and explore the varied landscape. You can see the rugged coastal cliffs and spot seals, and there are many fields and meadows and a serene lake. At the Park is also an Information Centre where you can learn about the nature and history of the Park, and there are various trails you could take, or even try orienteering.
Holyhead Leisure Centre
You can visit this Leisure Centre for a good range of activities and facilities which include a swimming pool, squash and a gym with both weights and cardiovascular equipment. There’s a sports hall which provides for a variety of sports including badminton, table tennis, basketball and roller skating, and the Centre also has a cafe.
