Not too far from Merthyr, is this historic manor house which was built in the mid 16th century and you can look around this restored building and see the rooms which have been furnished in period style of the mid 17th century, using reproductions from the 1500’s and 1600’s. There are features in the gardens which also reflect the 16th and 17th centuries and include a knot garden, pond and medicinal plants.
Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary
Situated in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park, this Sanctuary is a wonderful place that rescues animals who are now well cared for and living happy lives. The animals here include chimps, spider monkeys and baboons, as well as a number of other animals such as horses, cats, dogs and donkeys. Whilst not a zoo, it’s great experience to see these animals happy after enduring cruelty, neglect or other such unhappy situations, and you can also enjoy have a rewarding time being a keeper for the day.
Dare Valley Country Park
A short distance from Merthyr, you can enjoy beautiful surroundings in this country Park with a number of trails to follow while you admire the countryside. There’s a wealth of wildlife to be seen here, and you can explore the woods, lakes, waterfall and moors, and there’s also a Visitor Centre.
