Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
You can visit this beautiful Cathedral which was built in the late 19th and early 20th century in Neo-Byzantine style, and which contains relics of Alexander Nevsky. It is an impressive building and a distinctive landmark in the City, with its attractive domes and large central gold plated central dome, along with mosaics depicting a number of saints. The interior is beautifully decorated and in the crypt you will find a museum displaying many colourful icons.
National Historical Museum
This Museum houses a large collection of artefacts relating to the history of Bulgaria. Among the collections are Iron Age tombstones and armour, an arms collection, uniforms, traditional costumes, timepieces, furniture, household items and fine art. You can also see a collection relating to space, which includes items regarding the Soviet space mission in 1979 in which Bulgarian Georgi Ivanov was a cosmonaut, with exhibits on show such as his space suit.
National Art Gallery
Situated in the former Palace in Sofia, on a visit to this Art Gallery you can see a wide range of Bulgarian art works. Among the works to be seen are a huge and beautiful collection of icons, paintings from the Middle Ages, along with contemporary works.
National Institute of Archaeology with Museum
Part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and situated in a 15th century former mosque, this archaeological Museum is home to a broad collection of artefacts ranging from ancient times to the 1700’s. Collections here include prehistorical artefacts, treasures from the Bronze Age to Antiquity and medieval items.
The Boyana Church
You can visit this historic Orthodox Church which dates back to the 10th century with additions in the 1200’s and 1800’s. The Church is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has many wonderful original frescoes, particularly those from the mid 13th century which have survived very well preserved, with many detailed figures.
National Gallery for Foreign Art
This Gallery is situated in an elegant Neo-Classical building constructed in the 1800’s, which used to be the Royal Printing Office. Here you can see lovely and varied collections of art which include Indian art such as miniatures and religious figures, Japanese art including woodblock prints, African art such as masks and sculptures, as well as Buddhist art. You can also see European art from the 1400’s to the 1900’s, and includes Dutch paintings from the Golden Age, Italian, Flemish and French works.
Ivan Vazov National Theatre
You could come and see a performance at this National Theatre which is a splendid building constructed in the early 20th century in Neo-Classical style. The Theatre is a popular landmark of the City, with its elegant columns and pediment with relief sculpture.
This is a very attractive and large Park in the City where you can enjoy peaceful green spaces and trees along with colourful flower displays, ideal for a walk or picnic. You can also see features including sculptures and the lovely lake with waterlilies, fountains and there are also football stadiums located here.
