Archaeological Museum of Macedonia
Housed in a beautiful Neo-Classical style building, this Archaeological Museum has a wide range of collections ranging from prehistory to medieval times, displaying the ancient history of the country. Among the exhibits are Byzantine mosaics, armoury, coins, paintings and a recreated ancient Roman chariot.
This stone arched bridge crosses the Vardar River in the City, is an important landmark in Skopje and can be seen on the City flag. The bridge was constructed in the mid 15th century under Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, and has a guardhouse. It has been restored a number of times after being damaged, particularly after the mid 16th century earthquake, but still remains standing strong.
This is an impressive monument situated on the Vodno Mountain in honour of two millennium of Christianity. The cross is 66 metres in height, and at night is illuminated beautifully. You can take the Millennium Ropeway cable car trip up the mountain to the base of the cross to see it up close, and have wonderful views over the City and surrounding landscape.
Situated in the former Turkish baths built in the 1400’s, this Gallery houses collections of art dating from the 1300’s to the 1900’s. Visitors can see exhibits which include Byzantine wall paintings and icons, abstract art, surrealist and expressionist art, postmodern and pop art along with constructivist work.
Museum of Contemporary Art
Here you can see a range of contemporary art works by both national artists and foreign artists. The works show the evolving of Macedonian art from the mid 1900’s to contemporary, as well as international art from across the world from the mid 20th century together with collections of modern art from artists including Pablo Picasso.
This Park is a delightful place to come and enjoy the green space in the City. Here you can find attractive lakes and bridges and plenty of trees, and you can explore the lovely surroundings or relax and have a picnic. There’s an abundance of nature and wildlife, with many species of birds, and you can also see the lovely Bonsai Garden which is located in the Park.
This grand triumphal arch is situated in Pella Square and was built in 2012 and designed by Valentina Stefanovska. It is over 20 metres high, and honours 20 years of independence of the country. The arch has scenes showing Macedonian historical events on marble reliefs.
